  Driver's Licences in Ontario

There are three items required for driving: A valid Driver's Licence, insurance, and Ownership. Having a driver's license is a privilege, not a right. A driver's licence means you have permission by law to drive. All drivers must have a driver's license to operate a vehicle of any kind on a public highway in Ontario. You are required to carry a driver’s licence that is valid for the vehicle and conditions under which it is operated.

Driver's Licence Card

A driver's licence in Ontario is issued in the form of one card. On the front of the driver’s licence, it has a license holder's information such as full legal name, photograph, date of birth, full address, unique licence number, issue date, expiry date, any restriction, class of license (e.g G1, AZ) etc.  The expiry date is 5 years from the day you received your G1 licence.

You must carry your licence with you whenever you drive a motor vehicle. To be sure that it is valid, always look at the expiry date and renew ahead of time at any Service Ontario location.

Driver Licence
Condition Codes

As a driver, you must meet specific vision requirements to operate a vehicle. If you require glasses or contact lenses to improve your vision to these specific standards, you will have a Condition Code “X” on your license. See the table below for a full list of conditions/endorsements.

Other condition codes may be added to the driver's licence. These condition codes are related to health, disability, a criminal conviction for driving while impaired by alcohol, drugs or other substances. Usually,  they are added to the driver's licence when the driver obtains a new licence,  declares a change in a state of health, or the medical or eye examination revealed problems.
