Ontario G Licence System has 3 classes of licensing: G1, G2 licence, and full G licence. New drivers must go through the three-stage graduated licensing process gradually by passing three different exams leading to full driving privileges as experience is gained over time. A new driver has 5 years to become a fully licenced driver from the day the person passes G1 test. . If the driver does not get the G licence within 5 years, she/he will need to restart the graduated licensing process. Let us discuss the steps for obtaining a licence to drive in Ontario for a person with no driving experience.

To apply for a driver’s license at any DriveTest centre in Ontario an applicant must be at least 16 years old. The applicant needs two pieces of identification (original and valid documents that display legal name,  date of birth, and signature. Acceptable documents include a Passport (Canadian or foreign), Canadian Citizenship Card with photo, Ontario Photo Card, and Permanent Resident (PR) Card. To obtain your driver's licence you must pass a serious of tests.

  1. A Vision Test
You must complete a vision test since you need to be able to see what you are doing when driving a vehicle.  Eye exam and written knowledge test is conducted at Driver Examination Centres.
  2. G1 Written Test
You must pass a written test about the rules of the road and traffic signs. Ontario government tests your knowledge of signs, signals, markings, and understanding of safe driving practices and traffic laws. The written test may ask you about seatbelts, traffic signs, and lights, emergency vehicles, how to use headlights, speed limits, entering or exiting a freeway, what drivers must do when they meet streetcars and school buses, driver licence suspensions, the demerit point system, passing other vehicles, collision reporting, sharing the road with other road users, rules of the road. After passing these tests, you will get a G1 Licence (enter Level One).

After passing the knowledge test and paying  G1 licence package fee (1 knowledge test attempt,  a class G2 road test, and a 5-year driver’s licence) your G1 licence is issued by the government (enter Level One).

help them learn the proper driving skills and knowledge. When you get your G 1 license as a learning driver you are required to practice driving for at least 8 months, so that you gain driving experience in a wide range of driving situations. You can get the G2 license after 8 months, instead of 1
year, if you have successfully graduated from the Beginner Driver Education Course (online driving course).
