Ontario G Licence System has 3 classes of licensing: G1, G2 licence, and full G licence. New drivers must go through the three-stage graduated licensing process gradually by passing three different exams leading to full driving privileges as experience is gained over time. A new driver has 5 years to become a fully licenced driver from the day the person passes G1 test. . If the driver does not get the G licence within 5 years, she/he will need to restart the graduated licensing process. Let us discuss the steps for obtaining a licence to drive in Ontario for a person with no driving experience.

To apply for a driver’s license at any DriveTest centre in Ontario an applicant must be at least 16 years old. The applicant needs two pieces of identification (original and valid documents that display legal name, date of birth, and signature. Acceptable documents include a Passport (Canadian or foreign), Canadian Citizenship Card with photo, Ontario Photo Card, and Permanent Resident (PR) Card. To obtain your driver's licence you must pass a serious of tests.

A Vision Test
You must complete a vision test since you need to be able to see what you are doing when driving a vehicle. Eye exam and written knowledge test is conducted at Driver Examination Centres.

G1 Written Test
You must pass a written test about the rules of the road and traffic signs. Ontario government tests your knowledge of signs, signals, markings, and understanding of safe driving practices and traffic laws. The written test may ask you about seatbelts, traffic signs, and lights, emergency vehicles, how to use headlights, speed limits, entering or exiting a freeway, what drivers must do when they meet streetcars and school buses, driver licence suspensions, the demerit point system, passing other vehicles, collision reporting, sharing the road with other road users, rules of the road. After passing these tests, you will get a G1 Licence (enter Level One).

After passing the knowledge test and paying G1 licence package fee (1 knowledge test attempt, a class G2 road test, and a 5-year driver’s licence) your G1 licence is issued by the government (enter Level One).

LEVEL 1: G1

Level One lasts 12 months. At this time you should learn how to drive safely and prepare yourself for your first road test. The Ministry of Transportation encourages new drivers to register for the Beginner Driver Education Course organized by a driving schools approved by MTO to
help them learn the proper driving skills and knowledge. When you get your G 1 license as a learning driver you are required to practice driving for at least 8 months, so that you gain driving experience in a wide range of driving situations. You can get the G2 license after 8 months, instead of 1
year, if you have successfully graduated from the Beginner Driver Education Course (online driving course).

LEVEL 2: G1 Exit Road Test and G2 Licence

To get a G2 licence (move to Level Two), you must pass a road test. G1 ROAD TEST assesses your basic driving skills ILevel One).
Road Test for G2 Licence
- For the G2 ROAD TEST, you must demonstrate a high level of driving skills and knowledge, show that you can drive well on a freeway or high-speed highway, and perform driving tasks such as starting, stopping, turning, parallel parking, and three-point turning. The examiner also assesses Your observation skills, how well you manage the space around your vehicle, your ability to make a safe lane change, how you communicate with other road users, and your driving decision will be checked as well.

If You Fail the Road Test
When you fail your road test, you can take the test again, but you must wait at least ten days between tests.

Level Two lasts at least 12 months. After 12 months at Level Two, you may take and pass a ROAD TEST to get a G Licence (full licence privileges). You must have highway driving experience before taking a G2 EXIT TEST.

Level 3: G
|
You can get your G licence 12 months from the day you get your G2 driver’s licence. After 1 year since you get your G2 licence, you are eligible to book your second in-vehicle road test for G licence. In this stage, you have to pass a 30-minute road exam that tests advanced driving skills including
driving on the highway. Once successfully completed you are fully licenced G-class driver and you can drive
without the restrictions of a G2 license.

If you are not successful, you can wait 10 days and book your in-vehicle road exam again.
